North Coates {sometimes called North Cotes} is a village and civil parish situated close to the coast about 10 miles (16 km) north east of the town of Louth. Lincolnshire, England.
The grade II* listed church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and is built of limestone, dating from the 13th century, although mostly rebuilt in 1865 by James Fowler of Louth. The upper part of the font is 12th century and the lower part 19th century.[1] There is a medieval scheduled standing cross in St Nicholas churchyard, with a square base south east of the south porch of the church, and believed to stand in its original position.[2]
In the village, Ivy Cottage is a grade II* listed building dating from the early 18th century which is unaltered and in its original condition.[3]
RAF North Coates first opened during the First World War, certainly by mid 1918 and closed in June 1919. It reopened in 1927 As an Armament Practice Camp and was redesignated in 1932 as Temporary Armament training camp. It was redesignated again in 1940 as RAF North Coates and closed in 1947 and placed on care and maintenance. Between 1954 and 1956 54 MU were stationed here and it reopened in 1963 top become Britains first Bloodhound SAM site which closed in 1990. It is now a flying club.[4]
